Step 1
Find out if the appraiser is a current member of the American Quilting Society. This society often provides information about determining the age of quilts and their values. Find out if he/she has taken appraisal classes and if he/she earned certificates. You may also want to verify the appraiser's most recent continuing education in the quilting arena.
-
Step 2
Ask the appraiser to meet with you prior to turning over your quilt. Here are a few questions you may want to ask:
What credentials do you have?
Have you ever judged quilts in a competitive arena?
What quilting appraisal classes have you taken?
What other quilting activities have you participated in? -
Step 3
Ask what type of form your appraisal will come on. It should have "American Quilters Society Appraisal Form" printed across the top. Your appraiser should be asked if a seal will be placed on the bottom once completed. This seal will be raised and slightly embossed. Also you should indicate the purpose of your appraisal.

Step 4
Ask your appraiser for a receipt for your quilt. Find out when the appraisal will finish and where your quilt will be kept during the process. Make sure it will be kept in a safe place.
