Home foreclosures are up across America. Residents of Ohio have many resources available to them to help fight home foreclosures. Many of these are state-government sponsored resources and counseling services that can give Ohioans the information and advice they need to stay in their homes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Call NeighborWorks America for pre-foreclosure counseling and legal assistance. This national nonprofit organization provides financial support, technical assistance and training for community revitalization efforts.

  2. Step 2

Contact "Save the Dream," Ohio's foreclosure prevention effort. The organization provides information and highlights programs that can help homeowners reduce the risk of foreclosure.

  3. Step 3

Seek housing counseling from one of the HUD-approved Ohio counseling agencies. For a link to these organizations, see the link in "Additional Resources."

  4. Step 4

Get legal help from Ohio Legal Services, an organization dedicated to providing legal services to low-income Ohioans.

  5. Step 5

Contact the Ohio Attorney General if you have been the victim of predatory lending.

Tips & Warnings
  • Seek help as soon as possible---you will have more options earlier in the process than after you've missed multiple mortgage payments. Know your mortgage terms and the laws in Ohio to know what the mortgage lender can do if you miss a payment.
  • Avoid foreclosure schemes that require fees or that ask you to sign over your home.
