Make an Christmas Ornament Pinata

Piñatas are normally reserved for holidays like Cinco De Mayo, Halloween and birthdays, but children and adults can celebrate the candy bashing festivity any time of the year. For Christmas, there are several different piñata themes you can use and one of them is a homemade Christmas ornament. Using papier mache and a few other supplies, you will be swinging away at the piñata and enjoying candy just before Santa arrives.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a papier mache mix by putting 6 cups of water and 2 cups of flour into a bowl. Mix well for about 30 seconds.

    • 2

Cut up newspaper in small 3-inch shreds. You do not have to be exact on this, as long as they are all fairly small. Use up a whole newspaper to make the shreds.

    • 3

Lay out two sheets of full newspaper on the table. This will make your cleanup a lot easier and keep the table from getting stained.

    • 4

Blow up a round balloon. Set the balloon on the table.

    • 5

Dip the strips of newspaper into the papier mache mix and drape them over the balloon. Try to keep the strips evenly spread out on the balloon and smooth out any lumps or bumps that they create. Layer the strips of newspaper over the balloon three times so that the papier mache will stay strong.

    • 6

Let the balloon dry overnight and finish the project the next day. You could also do the first process in the morning and complete the rest at night, but make sure there is plenty of drying time for the balloon.

    • 7

Use scissors to cut a small opening at the top of the papier mache and pop the balloon that is inside. This opening is where the candy and treats will go into when the piñata is fully created.

    • 8

Wrap shiny reflective wrapping paper around the whole piñata. The traditional ornament colors are gold and silver, so bright reflective gold and silver wrapping paper will work the best.

    • 9

Add glitter glue around the whole piñata to give it a shinier and more entertaining look.

    • 10

Fill the piñata with candy. The next step requires the opening to get blocked off, so put everything you want inside of the piñata at this point.

    • 11

Create a top for the ornament by crushing and molding a piece of tinfoil. Attach the tinfoil by using a stapler, duct tape or super glue.
