The Canaan dog is a medium-sized herding dog once used to herd sheep in Israel. These very healthy dogs make wonderful guard dogs since they are naturally wary of strangers. Canaan dogs typically do very well with adults, children and other dogs, especially if they are well socialized at a young age. This breed tends to attach itself to a single member of the family. With the proper care and maintenance, Canaan dogs typically live about 12 years.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dog brush Mild shampoo Dog toothbrush Dog toothpaste Lightweight dog leash Dog collar
  1. Step 1

Brush your Canaan dog on a weekly basis. This breed's coat requires very little attention, but weekly brushing will help remove loose hair, especially during the time your pet is shedding. Your Canaan dog should be bathed every couple of months using a mild shampoo.

  2. Step 2

Brush your Canaan dog's teeth on a daily basis using a special dog toothbrush and toothpaste. Brushing will help reduce plaque build up and other oral health problems that can quickly become serious. Use the same technique you would use to brush your own teeth, remembering to brush both the fronts and backs of the teeth. The dog toothpaste is designed to be swallowed by your pet, so do not worry about having him spit it out.

  3. Step 3

Feed your Canaan dog a nutritious diet of dog food. Canaan dogs need a nutritious diet in order to maintain their high level of activity. Check the nutrition label of your dog food to ensure that one of the first ingredients is meat, poultry or fish. Avoid feeding your Canaan dog table scraps and other people food.

  4. Step 4

Provide your Canaan dog with plenty of physical activity. Canaan dogs require a large amount of exercise. Long walks or jogs using a lightweight leash and collar are a great way to provide your pet with plenty of exercise and maintain its weight. Playtime in the park or in a backyard is another great way to provide your Canaan with its required amount of physical exertion. If not provided with enough physical activity, your pet may quickly become bored and destructive.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use the time you spend brushing your Canaan dog as bonding time.
  • Never use human toothpaste to brush your Canaan dog's teeth. Human toothpaste can be dangerous if swallowed and your pet will not be able to spit it out.
