How to Find Free Downloadable Games on the Web
Many of the free downloadable games on the Internet are only free trials which expire in a month. Others can put viruses and spyware on your hard drive. It's important to know where to go to find games that are safe to install on your computer. Fortunately, there are many websites that offer games that are both safe and free. If you stick exclusively to these reputable websites, you will be able to find plenty of free games for your entire family.

1
Visit CNET's Download.com. Search on a term such as "kids' game" or "chess" in the field at the top. Under "Narrow search: By license type," click "Free." Click on the "Games" link on the left. If you need to narrow your search, select your operating system. Under "Sort by" select "User rating." Click on the name of the game to find user reviews and ratings. Read the editor's description for important information about the game. All games on this site are tested spyware-free.

Navigate to the TUCOWS website (see Resources below). Click on the tab which matches your operating system. Search on the game you're looking for. To find all the games, simply search on "Game." Beside "Filter by" click "Freeware." Also try clicking on the "OpenSource Licenses" link to find free software under the GNU General Public License. Check the popularity on the right side of the listing. Highly rated games have between three and five blue cows. The popularity percentage is directly below the cows. Some popular games have never been rated, so don't go strictly by ratings. Click on the name of the game to see more information and see a screen shot.

Visit the Jumbo website (see Resources below). Scroll down and click on the "Games" link on the left. A list of the newest games will appear. Jumbo will not allow you to sort freeware from shareware games. However, you can select whether you'd like arcade, board and puzzle, role playing, action adventure, sports, strategy or card games. Sort the results by date. Older games may have dead links or to be designed for obsolete operating systems, so favor ones that have been newly added.

Go to MMORPG to find free massively multiplayer online role playing games (see Resources below). Many of these games are completely free. However, all of them must be played online. Access MMORPG's comprehensive list of games by clicking the "Game List" link in the menu. You can sort the games by the "Fee" link at the top of the list. There are two fees related to online games; the fee to purchase the game, and the monthly fee required to play it online. MMORPG doesn't separate them. Click on the name of the games marked "Free" to see whether they're really free to download and play.

Go to ZDNet Downloads (see Resources below). Find your operating system. Then scroll down and click on the "PC Games" or "Games - Mac" link. Beside "Show only" select "Free." Click "Filter." Click on the "Download" button to get the game. You must have a free membership to ZDNet to download games from the site. ZDNet requires that you provide your name, email address, physical address, the company you work for and your telephone number. So if you don't want to provide your personally identifying information, you may want to skip this site.
