Buy a notebook that will be used specifically for recording dreams. It should be special and used for no other purpose other than recording dreams.

Keep the notebook and a pen or pencil by the bed, perhaps on a nightstand or on the floor. It should be within easy reach during the night.

Write down every detail you can remember as soon as possible after a vivid dream occurs. Be sure to describe everything as accurately as possible, such as people, animals, colors or activities that took place during the dream.

Record the date and time that the dream occurred.

Record any other information that may pertain to the dream, such as if you had a bad day or if there is some event that is consuming your thoughts while you are awake.
