If you've ever gotten a compliment and replied with "No, I'm not," "Um, thanks," or some thrown-together, insincere statement, you need a crash course in compliment etiquette. It's not tough to appreciate the good things about yourself that others notice, if you only take the time to let the words sink in and contemplate you response. Don't be bashful--accept that compliment with pride.

How to Accept a Compliment With Tact

  1. Step 1

Listen to exactly what the person issuing the compliment has to say. Don't shoo the words off halfway through; if he has something nice to say, let him say it.

  2. Step 2

Don't respond with negativity. Don't deny what she has to say. By doing so, you're disrespecting the kindness she wants to give you. Mentally and vocally accept the compliment.

  3. Step 3

Respond with a simple "Thank you" and then a follow up. There is always something you can say that corresponds with the compliment he has offered. If he compliments your shoes, tell him where you got them. If he compliments your hair, recommend your stylist. It will show not only that you're paying attention, but that you appreciate what he is saying.

  4. Step 4

Remember to look the person in the eye when responding. A direct gaze relates sincerity and appreciation.

  5. Step 5

Don't immediately respond with a countercompliment; it will come off as insincere. However, remember these kind words so that next time you see the person, you can pay her a compliment as well.

  6. Step 6

Remember the person's compliment in your daily life. You may want to build on the compliment, such as laughing more openly if she likes your laugh or doing your makeup a certain way if she admired it. Furthermore, remembering such compliments is a confidence booster and may make you less apt to shoo off compliments in the future.

  7. Step 7

Pass on the kindness. For every compliment you're paid, compliment another person. Sincere compliments have a way of coming back to you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Everyone gets anxious once in a while with an overeager compliment. It's OK to blush or get a bit shy, but make sure you also show your appreciation.
  • There are people who compliment just for the sake of doing so. If someone is overeager to compliment, mostly insincerely, it's OK to cut the process short and simply express your thanks.
