How will your customers find your website? You'll need to optimize your website for search engine marketing (SEM) to leverage online marketing and get more site traffic. There are many online tools and websites that can help you improve your visibility online. Follow these steps to start the process of optimizing SEM for your website.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Plan a search engine marketing strategy. Determine if you will be focusing on natural, free search engine listings and/or paid search engine listings. This may depend on the size and age of your business along with your budget and available time.

  2. Step 2

Optimize your website content for natural search engine listings. Develop a list of keywords and dedicate one page per keyword. Focus each web page on a specific, relevant keyword and repeat the keyword a few times naturally within the page. Name the page with the keyword.

  3. Step 3

Submit your websites to directories and search engines to help get your website indexed faster. The more relevant links you have pointing to your site from other websites, the higher your search engine listing will appear, keeping you more visible online.

  4. Step 4

Let your website age and check back for natural search engine results. Repeat steps 1 -- 4 on a regular basis to get the most out of free online marketing and advertising.

  5. Step 5

For paid search engine listings, you can sign up to be a pay-per-click (PPC) advertiser at one of the popular PPC websites at Google, Yahoo, or Microsoft. The most popular is Google Adwords. You can test the various websites and keywords by running and managing several PPC ad campaigns with a smaller budget.

  6. Step 6

Consider paid inclusion websites. You can pay some search engines, like Yahoo, to be included in their paid search listings. The paid inclusion option is typically a larger one-time fee, which gives you a guaranteed listing in the paid listings section. It may also help to get you indexed faster in the natural search listings and at other search engines.

Tips & Warnings
  • Search engines change their rules so stay updated. Review search engine optimization (SEO) rules and blogs online and always stick with white-hat techniques, which will not get you banned from the search engines. You can search for online tools to find good keywords and check the keyword density of your website. Check Google Webmaster Tools to see that your web pages are indexed with Google.
  • Do not use black-hat techniques or your website can be banned from search engines. To be effective in the long run, rely on useful, relevant content and marketing strategies, instead of trying to trick the search engines.
