The Armadillo

The armadillo is a curious creature that is closely related to sloths and anteaters. They are found primarily in Latin America, though the nine-banded armadillo is found in the United States. Identifying the armadillo is fairly easy due to some very distinctive traits and actions. This article focuses on the nine-banded armadillo as this is the most commonly found species. The other armadillo species are largely threatened due to hunting, and lack of habitat.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Notice the bony shell that resembles a coat of armor. This shelled creature is the only living animal that has this protective shell. It covers the armadillo's back, head and legs for protection. When threatened the nine-banded armadillo will curl into a ball for protection beneath this shell.

  2. Step 2

Observe that the armadillo is usually a brown color, but can also be various shades of pink. The color variations of the armadillo are related to the individual species and age.

  3. Step 3

Notice the long snout that the armadillo uses to burrow for food. This snout is great for digging for insects, though the armadillo will also eat occasional plants and fruits. The armadillo also digs a burrow to sleep in for about 14 hours a day.

  4. Step 4

Observe that the armadillo also has five very sharp claws on each foot to also aid in digging burrows. The armadillo is a very capable digger, and can quickly disappear into a burrow when threatened given the chance.

  5. Step 5

Watch as the armadillo flicks out its long sticky tongue to scoop up the various insects to eat. This tongue is very similar to the anteaters tongue of which the armadillo is a close relative.

  6. Step 6

Observe the wide range of sizes the armadillo comes in. The smallest armadillo is around 5 inches and weighs only a few ounces, while the largest armadillos grow to 60 inches and can weigh in excess of 150 pounds.

Tips & Warnings
  • The best time to see an armadillo is in the mornings or evenings. Armadillos are very susceptible to the cold and can die from exposure.
  • Be very careful with armadillos as they have sharp claws and teeth. As with any wild animals, do not try to handle one of these creatures.
