Step 1
Prowl around the capital of Lima, which was founded in the 16th century. A good starting place would be the Plaza Mayor. Here you can see the Changing of the Guard outside the Palacio de Gobierno 6 days a week at 11:45 a.m. The vast baroque cathedral was built over an Incan temple and includes a museum of religious artifacts and the marble tomb of explorer Francisco Pizarro.

Step 2
Bring your board and hang ten. Peru is an amazing destination for surfers. The waves are long and the weather is perfect. Top sites along the northern coast are Organos, Mancora, Cabo Blanco and Lobitos, while the central coast is known for Pacasmayo, Nonura and the legendary Chicama.

Step 3
Take a pilgrimage to the lost city of the Incas--Machu Picchu. There are a variety of ways to get there, including a train from Cuzco. Dedicated hikers prefer the Inca Trail, but because it's become so popular and over-used, you now have to apply for a permit and sign up with a tour company to even use the trail. This can get pricey.

Step 4
Cruise the great Amazon River. You can either book a cruise online or check around in the town of Iquitos. Tours run from two or three days to over a week, depending on the destination and the type of sightseeing being done. The cruises usually run in excess of $2,000.

Step 5
Visit the lovely Lake Titicaca, 12,500 feet above sea level. The best way to get there is to take a train from Cuzco to the town of Puno. Here you can either sign on for an organized tour or rent a boat and explore on your own. The fishing here is excellent.
