How to Use Adium for Instant Messaging

There are so many ways to stay in touch with friends and family nowadays, and one of the methods that many people (especially young people) prefer is instant messaging. Instant messaging is a form of communication in which typed messages are exchanged between two people over the Internet through a variety of different programs. The only problem with instant messaging is the wide variety of programs out there: You might favor one type of instant messenger, while a friend prefers another. How can you avoid having to run multiple programs simultaneously just to stay in touch with everyone? That's easy: You just learn how to use Adium for all your instant-messaging needs.

      Go to the Adium website by following the link in Resources.

      Click on the "Download Adium" link that appears directly below the bright green duck.

      Wait for the Adium program to download to your computer.

      Open Finder on your Mac and perform a search for Adium if you don't see the program on your desktop. Double-click the Adium icon wherever it is located on your computer and follow the directions provided to install the program on your Mac.

      Set up all of your instant-messaging accounts so the Adium program can log you into all of them. If the program doesn't prompt you to do this automatically, you can add the accounts yourself by going to the File menu and selecting the type of account you would like to add under the "Add Account" drop-down menu.

      Set up your Adium preferences by selecting "Preferences" from the drop-down menu, then working through all of the menus presented.

      Select a person you would like to chat with on the Adium instant-messaging screen, double-click her name and begin to chat.

      To set an "away" message, click the status message that appears below your screen name at the top of the Adium instant-messaging window. Select the "Custom... away" option from the drop-down menu. Type your "away" message in the window that appears, then click "OK."
