The reverse ankle lock is a throwback technique reminiscent of old-time classic wrestling. The technique is called "reverse" because everything about it is backwards. It involves sitting backwards on a face-down opponent while you bend one of his legs backwards and lock his ankle to force a submission. Although it looks like something you might try on your little brother, the reverse ankle lock is used in professional mixed martial arts fights.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand up in your opponent's full guard. He is lying on his back with his legs wrapped around you. Standing up forces him to tighten his ankles together to try to prevent you from getting away.

  2. Step 2

Place both hands on your opponent's biceps. This helps you push yourself up and prevents your opponent from hitting you while you do.

  3. Step 3

Stand with your legs just outside your opponent's legs and squeeze your knees together. This will force your opponent's knees together and break his ankles apart. Once his ankles are unlocked his full guard is broken.

  4. Step 4

Move your hands to the floor above your opponent's head. Use them for balance as you "crawl" them forward. Follow with your legs. Since your opponent's legs are wrapped around yours, this crawl will result in him rolling up like a ball on his upper back.

  5. Step 5

Take your opponent over on his belly. Keep crawling with your arms and legs until your opponent has no choice but to do a backward roll and plop onto his stomach.

  6. Step 6

Sit down on your opponent. Place your weight on his rear end close to his hips. This provides you with a surprising amount of control, since it is very difficult for him to get up or roll over.

  7. Step 7

Wrap your arm around one of your opponent's ankles. This will be easy since his ankles are already just below your armpits. Pick one to perform the ankle lock on and wrap your forearm under this ankle from the outside.

  8. Step 8

Place your other arm on your opponent's shin. The hand should be just below the arm that is wrapped around his ankle.

  9. Step 9

Grab the wrist of your arm that is on your opponent's shin. Do this with the hand on the arm that is wrapped around his ankle. You have now closed the ankle lock.

  10. Step 10

Turn the ankle lock. Pull both your arms tight to your chest and arch your body backward. Sink your hips down into your opponent so he can't twist free. Your forearm will cut into your opponent's Achilles tendon causing extreme pain and forcing a submission.
