Fire starters are helpful for quickly lighting campfires. Create your own fire starters with a few recycled items from around your home. These muffin cup fire starters are made from scrap paper and crayons. There are many ways to make your own fire starters with melted wax, but this method is safer by melting the wax directly onto the fire starter in the oven. This is a useful project for Scout groups preparing for a camping trip. Children can easily assemble their own fire starters from leftover craft supplies. Please use adult supervision around the oven to prevent burns from the hot wax.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Muffin tin or pan Scrap paper Old crayons Scissors
  1. Step 1

Fill muffin tin or pan with paper muffin cup liners, using three liners per cup. The extra layers are to protect the pan from melted wax.

  2. Step 2

Cut newspaper or other scrap paper into one inch strips. Roll into coils and place into the muffin cups. Fill the muffin cup with paper.

  3. Step 3

Break old crayons into small pieces, place on top of coiled paper in the muffin cups. Use at least one crayon per cup. Don't overfill the cups; you just need enough wax to coat the paper. Its fine to leave paper wrappers on the crayon, as it will not affect the fire starter.

  4. Step 4

Place the filled muffin tin into a 250 degree F oven for about 15 minutes or until the crayons have melted. Carefully remove them from oven. If you left any wrappers on the crayons, you can now poke the empty wrappers deeper into the cup with a toothpick. Carefully remove the fire starters from the pan and allow them to cool completely.

  5. Step 5

Store the fire starters in a zippered plastic bag. Keep them away from direct sunlight as the wax could melt again if they're allowed to get too hot.

  6. Step 6

Use them like any other solid fire starter. Place one or two in the campfire ring. Place tinder and small sticks on top of the cup in a tepee formation. Light the muffin cup and gradually add more tinder and small sticks to start the fire.

Tips & Warnings
  • Muffin cups can also be filled with sawdust or wood chips. Candle stubs can be used instead of crayons, just shave into small pieces.
  • Use caution with hot wax to avoid burns.
