Many Americans dream of luxurious vacations to historic destinations, traveling from country to country seeing the sights. Others prefer to embark on a cruise with all the amenities and exciting ports of call. There is a way to combine the two through guided river cruises and with a few tips and tricks, finding inexpensive river cruises is a snap.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Contact Viking River Cruises. One of Europe's premier river cruise specialists, Viking River Cruises (see Resources, below) offers scenic tours of all the major cities of Europe and Asia, because most of them were founded near rivers. Viking offers last-minute discounts, family discounts, and short- or long-term packages to suit a passenger's budgetary needs. Viking also offers deeply discounted airfare through their partners.

  2. Step 2

Visit the AMA Waterways website. Another reliable river cruise specialist is AMA Waterways who also specializes in European river travel. A close competitor to Viking, their packages are often geared to entice customers away from Viking. AMA also partners with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) to offer members credits for booking with them.

  3. Step 3

Book with Mississippi River Cruises. For domestic travelers, Mississippi River Cruises (see Resources, below) offers luxury accommodations aboard paddle-wheel river boats. Gambling, parties and visits to many of America's major cities are included on all short-term and long-term cruises.

  4. Step 4

Book a cruise down the Nile. Tour Egypt (see Resources, below) is the semi-official website of the Egyptian government and offers special incentives to lure travelers to Egypt. The packages can include airfare through Egypt Air, the country's official airline, as well as cruises lasting from four days to 20 days. Off-season and other special discounts are regularly updated at their website.

  5. Step 5

Visit an AAA office. The American Automobile Association also offers travel agent services with discounts for members. In addition to being able to book a river cruise, the AAA offers travel insurance, can arrange for airfare if necessary, and other services including comparison shopping. People booking though AAA must be members to receive the discounts.
