These medium-sized dogs have very active bodies and minds. They make very good guard dogs since they are cautious of strangers. 1. Provide your Australian cattle dog with robust dog toys. Having chew toys will help prevent your dog from nipping at your heels, a practice they use to herd cattle. Any toy given to an Australian cattle dog should be extremely strong since they have very tough jaws and are usually hard on their toys.

2. Keep dangerous and poisonous substances out of your Australian cattle dog's reach. This breed is extremely curious and intelligent and likes to get into anything it can find. Any item that could be hazardous, such as medications, cosmetics, glass or small toys, should be kept above an adult's chest level, preferably put away in cupboards.

3. Provide your Australian cattle dog with plenty of outdoor activities. Walks and runs are a good way to help your pet get its daily exercise, but your dog may become bored with these activities. Joining a local organization where your cattle dog can use its problem solving skills, such as agility and herding practice, can help your pet exercise both its body and mind.

4. Brush your dog's coat on a weekly basis and bathe your pet every few months. The breed's coat is very easy to maintain and will continue to look healthy as long as it is brushed regularly. Use a mild shampoo to avoid over drying its skin.

5. Feed your Australian Cattle Dog a nutritious diet of dog food and avoid feeding it table scraps. Choose a dog food with meat, poultry, or fish listed as one of the first ingredients. Other foods should be avoided as they can lead to obesity and intestinal problems.
