Step 1
Check out the new hybrids. Using both gasoline and electricity, these vehicles definitely get better gas mileage than the average car on sale today. The Toyota hybrid Prius boasts 45 MPG (miles per gallon)/city and 48 MPG/highway. Honda makes a hybrid Civic that will give you 40 MPG/city and 45/MPG highway. However, the hybrids are more expensive than a comparable nonhybrid car. It takes some fancy figuring to find out if your gas pump savings makes up for the sale price of the vehicle.

Step 2
Drive into a Toyota new car lot and take a look at the Corolla. Toyota has prided itself on making a reliable, fuel efficient vehicle for some years. The newer Corollas sell for $5,000 to $10,000 less than a hybrid and will give you 25 MPG/city and up to 35 MPG/highway. However, the real buy in the Toyota category is the new Yaris which sells for nearly $6,000 to $11,000 less than a hybrid car and will give you 29 MPG/city and up to 36 MPG/highway.

Step 3
Take a look at the Chevrolet Aveo. The Aveo's price is between $12,000 and $15,000, a little less than the Corolla. It offers up to 24 MPG/city and up to 34 MPG/highway. Chevrolet also offers a little larger car, the Cobalt. It's a bit more expensive and just a little higher than the Corolla. It's gas usage comes in at up to 25 MPG/city and up to 37 MPG/highway.

Step 4
Get smart and buy the new Smart Car (Smart For Two). There couldn't be a cuter car on the road. Besides it's so small there's never a problem parking. In case you're wondering who is behind the Smart Car, it's Chrysler. Priced between $11,500 and $16,500 you'll find yourself getting 33 MPG/city and a whopping 41 MPG/highway.

Step 5
Speed over and look at the Honda Fit. This zippy car has quick acceleration speed, not often found in smaller cars. It gets up to 28 MPG/city and up to 34 MPG/highway. Its price is mid to low when compared to other fuel efficient vehicles. Some standards on this vehicle like power locks and windows as well as side airbags are extras on other cars.
