How to Work Through Writer's Block

Writer's block is the bane of many writers, from home hobbyists who have trouble finishing a story to professional writers who may have issues finishing pieces to send out, or even assignments. If you intend to move forward, then you need to work right through your writer's block, beating it back to get things done whether you are writing at home or elsewhere.

Instructions

    • 1

Step away from your computer if you are writing on a screen. Instead, try writing on a piece of paper.

    • 2

Stop working for a while on whatever your project is and take out a journal instead. Write about anything you want, up to and including your inability to write anything coherently.

    • 3

Leave home with a paper and pen or a laptop and try writing in a new location.

    • 4

Create a ritual that surrounds writing. For example, if you write professionally, change your clothes to dress nicer, apply makeup or do your hair before you begin working to put yourself in a working mindset.

    • 5

Assign a friend or loved one to "crack the whip" if you think you may work better under supervision. Make sure that you pick a friend that you can trust to be strict with you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Stepping away from your work for a short time is an excellent way to recharge yourself.

  • Do not take your breaks at your computer. Staring at the screen, even if you are doing something entertaining, is likely to make things worse for you rather than better.
