How to Use a Video Camera as an Alternate Computer Monitor
Video cameras are normally equipped to record live action or whatever is front of the lens, but when people to try to record a video screen or computer monitor, they may notice that lines move up and down the screen. Instead of adjusting frame rates or recording a subpar video, you can benefit from the knowledge that some cameras are equipped to feed a computer image directly to the screen, which comes in handy for recording or use as an alternate computer monitor.

1
Determine if your camera is able to receive a signal from a computer. Look for a built-in S-video port on the side of the camera. Most Panasonic video cameras will have this port on the right side; it features a circular, flip-down plastic piece and the words "S-Video IN/OUT."
-
2
Make sure your computer is compatible as well by looking for the same S-Video slot on the side, back or front of the unit.
-
-
3
Set your video camera to VCR mode, also called "VTR" or "Playback" mode on certain video cameras. The screen should be a bright blue, and usually display a time code.
-
4
Connect the S-Video cord from the computer's connection into the slot on the camera. If you already have a working monitor on the computer, you can simply right-click on the desktop and select "Properties" to load the screen option.
-
5
Use your keyboard if you do not have a screen available. Many times, the computer will recognize the connection, but if not, you will have to set it up manually. If the computer does recognize the connection, you will see a few flashes on your video camera's viewing screen and then, finally, the desktop.
-
6
Press "ALT" and "F4" for your computer to load the connection between the two devices if they do not automatically load. Some commands are different for computers and laptops; you may be looking for a box with two lines on the side. This button will change the display choice.
-
7
Move the mouse around to test the connection. Everything should be working fine, albeit rendered much smaller on the video-camera screen.
-
8
Use the camera's remote to press "Play" and "Record" at the same time. This will start the recording of the computer screen if there is a tape in the camera. This way, you can create high-quality captures for any project or movie you may be creating.
