How to Teach a Puppy to Walk Like a Dog

So you want to teach your puppy to walk like a dog? This is one of the hardest things for puppies to do; it's in their nature to be incredibly curious, leading them to have the attention span the length of ant. However, consistent work following the tips below will allow you and your pup a nice pleasant walk; and you'll be walking the dog, not the other way around.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your collar on your puppy and attach the leash to it while you're at home. Let the puppy drag the leash around for a while and get a feel for the collar.

    • 2

Correct the puppy each time it tries to bite or chew on the leash. This is very common for puppies and an issue of control.

    • 3

Walk your puppy around the living room, keeping it near your foot. Invariably it will try and go chase a bug or chew a pillow. Make a quick but firm pull on the leash to correct. When your puppy walks well for a while, give it a treat.

Go for an actual walk. Repeat the tips in Step 3, but don't offer any rewards until the end of the walk. Keep your pup on the proverbial, and literal, short leash.

As your pup starts to walk better, you can give it more flexibility to explore. However, the first five minutes of the walk are all the same; establish who is in charge first.
