1
Set up your lathe and cutting tools. Each tool has a specific purpose, so have each one that you will need for your project handy and be sure they are sharp, before you begin.
-
2
Select a piece of wood for your project. The wood should be hard enough for your project, and light enough for use. Choosing the right wood takes a little knowledge, so it is best to read up on articles on how to select the right wood before you begin the project. Furniture is typically built with hardwoods like oak, maple and ash. Model ships may use pine, oak or birch.

3
Set your piece of wood up on the lathe. Attach the wood so it is perfectly under center and spins in a balanced way. Blockish or square pieces of wood should be rough cut before they are put on the lathe.
-
4
Select an appropriate speed for your first cut, slower speeds are generally used during initial cuts.
-
5
Brace your chisel on the lather and apply pressure to the spinning block of wood to make the cut. This will shave off pieces of wood, cutting the block into a shape. Each section of the wood block can be cut into a different shape. Continue to cut until the piece is cut into the shape you desire.
