1
Cut four 4 by 4 boards to the height of the barn door.
-
2
Cut four 4 by 4 boards to half the width of the barn door opening, minus 8 inches to make up for the width of the vertical boards.
-
-
3
Lay the vertical and horizontal boards out in the shape of the doors right next to each other. Make sure the cuts are accurate, then nail the frame together using metal bracing and galvanized nails or screws.
-
4
Cut two more 4 by 4 boards to the width of each door minus 8 inches, and nail them directly to the back of the frame. If your doors are more than 8-feet high, consider using two cross braces, or install a diagonal brace on the top and bottom half of the barn door.
-
5
Cut your plank board to the length of the barn door, and lay them across the frames. Nail the planks to the top, middle and bottom cross frame. Your barn doors should be very rigid at this point, but light enough to open and close easily.

6
Add trim to the barn doors. Cut a strip of plank board to the total width of each door and nail it to the doors right across the center. You can add trim to the outside if desired.
-
7
Make sure each door is square, make any adjustments before you hang these doors.
