Improv is the art of acting on the spot. It has become a very popular form of entertainment in theaters and comedy clubs. It is used in classroom settings to enhance performing skills and played at parties for fun. The Improv game "Subtitles," also called "Foreign Film," can be played by beginners and experienced actors alike.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Explain the rules of the game to the audience. Bring four actors to the performance space, two center stage to act out the story and two seated on either side of the stage to translate.

  2. Step 2

Ask the audience to suggest a non-English speaking country that has produced your "foreign film." Ask the audience to suggest a title for your film as well. The title should dictate the acting.

  3. Step 3

Have the two actors that are center stage begin acting out a scene from your suggested foreign film, speaking in their own created gibberish language, a language that might sound similar to the language of the country suggested.

  4. Step 4

Translate the gibberish. After each actor speaks, the actor sitting on his side of the stage translates the line into English. The actors should take turns leading the story. The translators and actors should play off of each other's inflections and physical movements.

  5. Step 5

Find a natural resolution to your film scene. A big laugh is a great place to end. If the actors are not wrapping up, the emcee may step in with a "Thank you, and a big round of applause for our actors!"

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful not to step on each other's lines!
