Step 1
Kick off the Winterfest celebration on Friday evening with the traditional lighting of the Christmas Tree in Solvang Park. The park is located in the center of the village. The ceremony begins with traditional Danish costumed dancers and Danish folk songs and carols to welcome the season. After the tree is lit, Saint Nicholas (Father Christmas) makes his first appearance to bless the event and greet the Yuletide crowd.

Step 2
Join the locals and visitors on the first Saturday morning in December to watch the annual Winterfest Parade. The parade begins at the historic Santa Inez Mission at the edge of town. It winds its way along village streets lined with flowers, Danish and American flags, and half-timbered shops reminiscent of a typical 19th century Danish village. Costumed dancers, musicians and Christmas floats entertain the crowds along the parade route. Father Christmas makes his second appearance. The parade ends at the post office on Alisal Road. If you'd like to join the parade as a participant, contact the Solvang Convention and Visitors Bureau for an application. See the Resources section for details.

Step 3
Attend one of the two free live Nativity Pageant shows on the second Saturday evening in December. The Christmas story comes to life at the outdoor Solvang Festival Theater at 420 Second Street, featuring choirs, actors, live animals on stage. Arrive early for the best chance at good seating.
-
Step 4
Enjoy the many holiday decorated open houses, special Christmas Danish pastries, old-fashioned meals, Yuletide musicals, traditional craft demonstrations, and holiday shopping for gifts and decorations. The entire village transforms itself into a traditional European village with sparkling lights and a welcoming spirit. A complete schedule of events is available in mid-November. See the Resources section below.
