Decide if you will attend school or teach yourself. Fashion schools can be found near almost everyone and can be very costly. While a fashion degree may help you get internships and may even give you some classes on the business side of designing ladies fashion, a degree is not a necessity. Many designers did not have a degree yet became successful. Even if you do not attend a fashion school, you may benefit from a few courses in fashion or art. Even an online course from a school such as the Academy of Art University can be beneficial. Fashion courses can help you with the business side of fashion such as marketing and product development.

Get a job at your favorite clothing store. This is an excellent way to keep up on the latest trends and learn at least a portion of the business of fashion. While any job at a clothing store will gain you experience, you may try for a buyer position. This job will allow the aspiring designer to see the up and coming fashions before they become available to the general public. A smaller boutique may even let you sell some of the items you design if you build a good relationship with the owner or manager.

Apply for an internship at a design house. Not only does this give you the experience you need in regards to the fashion business but you will also make some contacts with influential people. Let it be known you design ladies fashion and you may be allowed to show your work.

Design ladies fashion often by sketching your ideas on paper. Ask your friends what they would like to see in design. Women may have ideas on comfort and style but men may have opinions on what designs they like more than other designs as well. This also allows you to try out many different designs before getting out the sewing machine.

5
Create a portfolio of your designs. A portfolio should contain examples of your work. Keep about 10 to 12 of your best designs in your portfolio and update it regularly. It may even be helpful to add in a few of your sketches. If you are applying for a casual designer then make sure that your portfolio is not filled with your best formal wear. Your portfolio should match the job you are applying for.

Sew up the designs you have made. You may need a dress form to do this or you can use a willing friend. Sell the fashion that you have designed through various avenues. Your friends may wish to buy your designs or you can sell them at used clothing stores or a local boutique. You could even design ladies fashion for sale on the internet through your own website or an online auction site.
