How to Do Skateboarding Tricks
Skateboarding takes a lot of time and practice. You need to acquire balance and learn to control and eventually finesse your tricks. This is not as easy as it sounds because you must do these things simultaneously. Take time to get used to just standing and riding your skateboard before you try any tricks. Once you are ready, there are some tricks you need to learn that are a must for skateboarders at parks and about town.

1
Learn to do transitions with your board. Have your pump down (bending knees at top of move--see Resources below). Go up the wall. When you are at your up-most point, bend your knees and bring yourself back down the wall facing the direction in which you are going (the opposite direction).

2
Perform a kick turn transition. When you go up a wall at a skate park, the kick turn is another way to turn into the opposite direction. You take the weight off the front of the board, put more on the tail and pivot around on the back wheels.

Drop in or enter from the top of the wall. Dropping in is the starting point on a lift. You begin at the top (flat part at the top of the wall). Place your board tail on the top of the lift (everything else is hanging over the edge). Then when you work up the nerve, take off down the wall.

Do the ollie, not a real simple move but one that you must know to do many of the fun tricks. Begin without moving and once you get the idea, you can practice the ollie while moving. Place your front foot near the middle of the board and the back foot on the end or tail of the board. Don't stay flat-footed on the tail; you need to use more of your toes. Bend knees and push down, snapping the tail. Front foot should turn and slightly slide up the front of the board. You and the board should go up, and the weight of your body will push slightly forward and balance it back down flat.

Grind a rail (50/50) with your skateboard. This is a fun trick that every skateboarder should know. Get a little speed, ollie up onto a rail while on your skateboard and place the rail in between your wheels on both ends of the board. Balance your body, slide your wheels down the rail and ride it down to the end of the rail for a dismount (lift weight from the front foot for dismount). You must do all of this quickly. You can do many variations.
