How to Make Mortar

One of the basic masonry construction elements is mortar. The purpose of using mortar is simply to hold stones firmly in place.
Construction can be completed without mortar, if "dry-stacking" methods are used. But if a structure is to be expected to withstand the forces of nature for many years to come, mortar is a must. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Create your own "premixed mortar cement" by combining two parts Portland cement with one part dry builder's lime in a bucket or pail.

    • 2

Mix the dry ingredients by combining one part of the premixed mortar cement with three parts sand in the wheelbarrow. Blend the mixture well with a trowel or mortar hoe. It is all right to increase the sand to four parts in order to stretch the mortar.

    • 3

Begin to carefully add water to the dry ingredients. Work as quickly as you can, because mortar begins to cure as soon as it becomes wet. It's a good idea to use a hose with a spray nozzle, because you can control the amount of water being added much easier.

    • 4

Create "dry" mortar by just barely moistening the dry material. If it has become too wet, just add some sand.

    • 5

Make "wet" mortar by adding water, blending well as you go, until you can create stiff peaks with the mixture.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cement and concrete products are harmful to the environment. Use as little as necessary, and always dispose of refuse properly. Mix the mortar up one small batch at a time, and use it right away.

  • The ingredients used here can cause severe eye and skin burns. Always wear eye protection and heavy-duty gloves.
