How to Make a Medieval Shield
Boys love to pretend they are knights chasing a dragon or defending a castle. They will pick up any object they can and use it as a shield or a sword. Whether your little one wants to just play knight or dress up for Halloween, this article is for you.

1
Get out a large piece of cardboard from a box or pizza container. This is the base of your shield, so you will need to cut it in to the shape of a shield.
-
2
Cut a straight edge for the shield across the top. You should use your ruler to make sure this edge is as straight as possible. Draw a line with your pencil. The length doesn't matter. The older your child is, the longer you want the shield to be.

Now draw a line curving slowly down to a point. Do this on both sides so that the two ends meet at the same point. The point should be directly in the middle of the top. You could actually draw the point first and then curve the lines up to the ends of the straight line you made. You will now need to cut those lines out so that your shield base is completed.

Using a box of aluminum foil, tear out strips and wrap them around the front of the shield until it is completely covered. It is okay if some of the sheets overlap. You are still going to put some designs over top of the silver shield. The aluminum foil should stay okay in the back, but if you want you can add some dips of glue to the edges.

5
Cut out a brown cross from your construction paper. This cross should be big enough to reach the top, bottom, and sides of your shield. You can hold the cross up to the shield when you are done and trim it to fit. Then glue it in place.

6
Find a picture of a fierce animal like a lion, tiger, or bear. Some nature or animal magazines would have these for sure. You can also find one online and print it out. Glue the picture of the animal in the middle of the cross.
-
7
Set your shield out to dry before you begin using it to play.

Tips & Warnings
Your child could choose another backdrop other than a cross. The website below shows other types of designs for the shields that can be made easily with construction paper.
Watch out for the metal teeth on the ends of the aluminum foil box. They are sharp and can cut little hands as well as the foil.
