A deer stand or deer blind can significantly help a hunter in the stalking and hunting of deer. While building a deer stand can be challenging, the results can be very rewarding and make hunting a deer much easier.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Extension ladder 5 square feet of scrap carpet Nails Rope 10 2-by-4 plywood boards 4 2-by-6 plywood boards
  1. Step 1

Research the ideal location for building your deer stand. Ideally, the deer stand should be located in a group of trees situated along a commonly frequented deer route.

  2. Step 2

Determine the ownership of the land you will be hunting on. Hunting on private land requires express written permission from the property owner (unless the owner is you). Most state hunting regulations only permit the building of temporary deer stands on public property. You must have permission to build your deer stand before you begin construction.

  3. Step 3

Select the tree in which your deer stand will be built. Use a mature tree that forms a fork approximately 10 feet off of the ground, or higher.

  4. Step 4

Build your deer stand platform frame using your four 2-by-6 plywood boards. After framing the platform, nail the 2-by-4 plywood boards across the bottom of the platform. To minimize noise when in your deer stand, nail a layer of carpet across your platform and secure it to the bottom of the notch in your tree.

  5. Step 5

Secure your extension ladder to the base of your platform and the base of the tree. If building a temporary deer stand, secure the ladder with tightly knotted rope.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you choose to paint your deer stand, do so at least four months before hunting season so that the paint scent does not scare the deer.
  • Ensure your ladder is secured to avoid injury. If building a permanent deer stand, construct plywood steps nailed to the tree. If enclosing your deer stand, check that there is proper ventilation and never burn fuel in your stand.
