Make Flour Finger Paint

On a rainy day, whip up a batch of this flour finger paint. Kids love finger painting because it's so much fun to get dirty and feel the smushy paint on the hands, but did you know that playing with finger paints can help kids with their development? The sensory stimulation involved with finger painting is especially good for children with autism or sensory integration disorder. It helps their brains to make neural connections they might otherwise miss. In addition, finger painting can be a great way to have kids practice their letters. Encourage them to make letters in the paint or even write their names. This flour finger paint is a snap to make and very inexpensive.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Combine flour, water and detergent in a mixing bowl.

    • 2

Stir until the mixture reaches a paste-like consistency.

    • 3

Divide the mixture into several bowls and add different colors of food coloring or powdered tempura paint to each bowl. Alternatively, blend the color into the paste as you paint with it.

    • 4

Experiment with different types of paper. You can buy finger painting paper, which has a sheen to it and doesn't absorb the paint, but it is an added expense. Paint on a cardboard box, poster board, construction paper, newspaper or anything else you have lying around.

Let the creations dry fully before you move them.

This is great! Even though my kids are past the fingerpainting stage, I think they'll get a kick out of making their own paint. Thanks!
