Start a Window Cleaning Business

One of the advantages of having a cleaning business is you really learn how not to clean windows. I have learned the hard way how to get those windows sparkling clean. I have also learned that I can add extra money by offering window cleaning as a part of my business. Below I have outlined how to start a window cleaning business and still keep your feet close to the ground.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Eagerness to succeed
  • Business cards
  • Cleaning supplies
  1. Step 1

Be legit. Obtain a business license. Choose a name for your business. The easiest way is to use your own name. For example if your name is Billy Bob then call your service Bob's window cleaning service. That way checks are made out to you and you don't have a problem cashing them. You won't even need a DBA if you do it this way.

  2. Step 2

    Getting clients:
Pass out as many business cards as possible. Focus on the businesses that have a storefront window. Don't forget the outside malls they are your best potential clients because they don't have the time to clean their own windows but want a good appearance for their customers. If you think they need to be cleaned then approach them. The more business cards you give out the greater your chances will be to get that first client. This is where your eagerness to succeed comes into play. I clean the windows for a gun shop in my area. I walked in hoping to get a cleaning account but instead she was more interested in having her windows and display cabinets cleaned. This is an extra $95 a month for an hour and half work. See resources below on how to order free business cards.

  3. Step 3

Cleaning supplies-I started with a step ladder, two squeegees, a squirt bottle with my own window cleaner (see below in tips) and paper towels. I advise you to upgrade to a telescopic pole and attachments when you start making more money because you can complete the task in half the time. You can get these from your local janitorial store or online.

  4. Step 4

Don't give up. You have to stick to it. You can do it. It does take time but think of it as you gaining experience. The more people you speak to the greater your chance will be to get your first client. Once you get that first client the rest becomes easier. Set up the day and time that they would like for you to do the windows, but just in case be prepared to do them on the spot then note in your calendar book to come back in one month.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you want to really add to your income check out my resources below to learn how to start your own cleaning company.
  • If you have a Dollar store in your area you can get most of your cleaning supplies for less than $10.
  • Vinegar, water and rubbing alcohol makes a great window and glass cleaner.
  • Don't take the "NOs" personal. Your eagerness to succeed will pay off.
  • Cleaning is very strenuous work so take it slow. There is a lot of bending and reaching so watch your lower back.
  • I would leave the large buildings to the bigger companies with the proper equipment.
