How To Make a Holiday Pomander
-
1
Empty a bottle of cloves onto a napkin or plate. Sort through the cloves and remove any that are broken. (Save them for cooking or other purposes.)
-
2
Plan a design for the cloves. You'll want the cloves to cover about 50 percent of the fruit. It's best to stick to simple shapes: stripes, spirals, stars, or polka-dots.

3
Use a push pin or small nail to break the skin and make "pilot holes," then push in the cloves. Once in a while, roll the fruit on a paper towel to absorb excess juices.
-
4
Mix the cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice and orris root in the decorative bowl. Place the clove-studded citrus in the bowl and roll them around in the spice mixture. For a couple of weeks, roll them around three or four times per day until the fruit begins to dry out.

When not on display, store in a dry place. The mixture of citrus with the scent of the spices will permeate the room whenever you bring them out.

Tips & Warnings
If your pomander begins losing its scent, dab it with a few drops of citrus scented oil and replace the old spices with fresher ones.
Using rubber or latex gloves is recommended, particularly if you have any cuts on your fingers or cuticles. Any citrus juice that gets on your cuts will sting.
