How to Find Relief for Canker Sores

What is it? A canker sore can appear anywhere inside your mouth, including on your tongue and gums. These sores are usually white or gray on the inside and have a red border. Although the sores are bothersome they are not contagious.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Medical remedies. Applying an over-the-counter anesthetic to the sore can minimize discomfort. Some brands also contain an antibiotic, to decrease the chance of developing another infection.

    Avoid Spicy and Acidic Foods. Until the sore has healed, you may want to hold off on your morning OJ or those enchiladas at lunch until the sore has been healed.

    Naturopathic remedies. Switch toothpaste. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS),

    a common ingredient found in toothpaste, can aggravate the tissue in your mouth thus causing a canker sore. You may want to try changing to a toothpaste that does not have SLS. Sip on licorice root tea. Skip this remedy if you have high blood pressure. This brew can help the healing process.
