Locate the OpenOffice.org application in your Applications folder on your Mac. Double-click on the OpenOffice.org icon. This will open OpenOffice.org software for the first time. There are a few questions the application asks you the first time you start the program. Follow through on answering the questions. Once this is complete, the OpenOfficeWriter program will open an Untitled Document. OpenOfficeWriter is similar to Microsoft Word. While you have OpenOffice.org open, don't forget to look for the app's icon in your Dock, click and hold on the icon and ask for the icon to "Keep In Dock". This will ensure an alias of the OpenOffice.org software will reside in your Dock.

Tips & Warnings
  • OpenOffice.org supports Windows, Linux, Solaris and Mac OS X. So you can run this software on any computer.
  • Remember that OpenOffice.org needs X11 to run on a Macintosh Computer. How will you know if you have it or not? If you get the message that your Mac does not have this software when you try to install OpenOffice.org, that is your warning that you will need to locate your install CDs or DVDS and install X11. Follow through with the rest of the steps to install OpenOffice.org.
  • If you would rather not deal with X11, you can download and install a copy of Neo Office for the Mac. Programs are similar.
