Things You'll Need:
- Alphabet Flash Cards
-
Step 1
The first step is helping your child to discriminate between letters. Take two letters that look different from each other and ask, "Which one is the (one of the letters)?" Once they can pick the letter you ask for, try using 3 cards at a time or more.
-
Step 2
The next step is to help your child identify the letter. Take one card and ask your child, "What letter is this?" The difference between this step and the first is that the child has to tell you what the letter is in this step, but only has to pick it out of two or more cards in the earlier step. To make this more fun, you can attach paper clips to the cards and use a fishing pole with a magnet to let them fish for a card and tell you what letter is on the card.
-
Step 3
After they have identified the letters, the next step is to teach the sounds. Start with consonants first, then short vowels and then long vowels. You can also you a version of the fish game to make it more interesting for your child.
-
Step 4
Find appropriate beginning reading material for your child. Even though some books say they are a step 1 book, you will see that the words are more advanced. There are just less words in the book. If you want to know an excellent series that has worked with many kids I have tutored, please feel free to leave a message for me.

on 11/18/2009 I couldn't find the same series I used 15-20 years ago on e-bay or Barnes and Noble. But, Barnes and Noble has a series called Phonics Tales that looks like it might be similar. The first book is (The or That) Cat Max for short A and there is The Best Nest for short e. I am not sure without actually seeing them in person. If it were me, I would order one or two and see if it works. They aren't very expensive. Otherwise, you can look more on the internet for Max the Cat which is the start of the old series. There are about 100 books of 8 pages in each that I got for about 150 dollars back then. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask. I hope this helps.
