According to the Encarta Dictionary, the term inversion involves reversing the arrangement, order or position of something. In natural medicine, an inversion involves a pose in which the body is in an inverted position--the head is lower than the body. You can benefit in many ways when you incorporate inversion therapy into your health program. Here are some of those benefits.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Improve your lymphatic system function with inversion therapy. The lymphatic system involves all the glands and lymph fluid; it plays an important role in carrying hormones and other essential chemicals. The body transmits messages to various organs through these chemicals and hormones. Proper function of your organs depends on the messages transmitted through the lymph fluid.

  2. Step 2

Obtain mental clarity. Lymph fluid also carries oxygen and nutrients, which nourish brain cells. Individuals generally report improved memory, concentration and awareness. Because all physical reactions originate in the brain, nourishing brain cells leads to mental alertness improved physical reactions.

  3. Step 3

Increase the bioavailability of important metabolic substances such as glucose and oxygen to the brain. According to Dr. Robert A. Martin, author of "The Gravity Guiding System," an adequate supply of these substances results in the creation of new neurotransmitters, critical for proper brain function. Such chemicals affect arousal, attention, control movement, and promote mental health.

  4. Step 4

Benefit from inversion therapy by eliminating constipation. During an inversion, stool moves from the ileocecal valve with gravity. The pressure of the stool on the intestinal walls stimulates movement and a stronger peristalsis.

  5. Step 5

Detoxify your system and improve your immune system function. Lymph fluid carries toxins away from unhealthy tissues. The lymphatic system is also responsible for the production of macrophage cells, which destroy harmful organisms, and lymphocytes, responsible for the production of antibodies.

  6. Step 6

Decompress your vertebrae and enjoy pain relief. Stretching your spinal column decompresses the discs and relieves back pain.

  7. Step 7

Increase circulation to the scalp with inversion therapy. An increased supply of blood flow and oxygen to the scalp leads to healthier hair follicles which in turn promote new hair growth.

Tips & Warnings
  • Inversions can relieve compression on the lower portion of the brain, and affect the flow of cerebral spinal fluid.
  • Another benefit of inversion therapy is that, according to research, the brain functions 14 percent better in an inverted position.
  • Other benefits include feeling rejuvenated, increased energy, reduced hair loss, relieve pain due to varicose veins and relieve depression, among others.
  • Avoid inversions if you're pregnant.
  • Individuals with high blood pressure should consult their physician before starting inversion therapy.
