discover an article in StumbleUpon using the StumbleUpon Toolbar and Firefox

Too many times have I seen people that are confused in the difference of discovering and voting for within StumbleUpon. The StumbleUpon toolbar simplifies things in FireFox. Since that is the primary browser that I use, I will base this How To on it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • FireFox Web Browser
  • Stumble Upon ToolBar
  • Articles
  • Internet Access
  • A Computer
  1. Step 1

The first and foremost thing that you will want to do is to find an article that you deem worthy enough to discover. The biggest mistake that I see people make when discovering an article is that they discover the actual entire website. The reason for this is because instead of being on the articles page, they are on the main page reading the article. The main thing here is to click on the title of the article that you are reading. This will take you to the individual post page.

  2. Step 2

Now that you are sure that you are on the right page, it is time to discover the article that you like. The next step in line is to click the "Thumbs Up" or "I Like It" button.

  3. Step 3

In doing this, it will pop up a new window. I have displayed that window here for you to see to make sure that you have the correct window.

  4. Step 4

The first portion of this window is the title section. It typically populates on its own and requires no adjusting. With that said, if it does not populate, then simply copy the title from the article and paste it there.

  5. Step 5

The next section is the Review Section. Here is where you write what you want to say about the article. If you want, you can just paste something from the article in here as well.

  6. Step 6

The following section is the Topic section. You have two places that you can choose this. Look at the arrows as they point both out. Choose these carefully as they can make or break the article in StumbleUpon.

  7. Step 7

The next bit of information is the tags. A lot of times I look to see if they have tagged their own article and use theirs. If not, and I know it is about the "New York Giants" then I will tag it with that.

  8. Step 8

Choosing whether or not their is adult content is a requirement.

  9. Step 9

The final step is self explanatory; Submit

Tips & Warnings
  • If done right, you can get flooded with page clicks for the day.
  • If you want you personal pages discovered, find friends on StumbleUpon and get them to do it. Remember that you are looking for quality, not quantity.
  • If you attempt to discover too many posts from a website, then you can get blocked from discovering any more from that website by StumbleUpon.
  • Subdomains are even worse because they are all seen as being the main page. So be careful.

on 10/30/2008 Thanks for this explanation Danny! There are so many bookmarking tools out there & it's nice to have StumbleUpon explained in an easy-to-understand way. Also, thanks for the warning about "discovering" too many posts from the same site. This article rocks!
