How to Make your own Onion Soup Seasoning Mix

Onion soup mix adds delicious flavor to meatloaf, casseroles, and soups. It's cheaper to make your own. Try it and see for yourself. Onion soups owe their popularity to the French, who first invented French Onion Soup. Onion soup mix owes its popularity to an unknown woman in California. In the 1940's, she first mixed dry onion soup mix with sour cream, and it has been beloved by Americans ever since.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3/4 cup dried minced onion
  • 1/4 cup onion powder
  • 1/3 beef or vegetable broth powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon celery seed, crushed
  • 1/4 teaspoon sugar
  1. Step 1

    Mix all the ingredients together in a small bowl. Store your new onion soup mix in an airtight covered container.

  2. Step 2

    To use this mix, 5 tablespoons or 1/3 cup equals a package of store bought onion soup mix. This makes several batches.

  3. Step 3

    For onion soup, mix 5 tablespoons of this mix with 2 cups of water. Boil for 1 minute, then simmer for 10 minutes.

    For onion soup dip, mix 5 tablespoons of this mix with 2 cups of sour cream. Serve with chips, crackers, or raw vegetables as dippers.

on 11/6/2008 I will definately try this, my husband uses onion soup mix in his mashed potato dumplings. It seems we are always running to the store for it. Since almost eveything is cheaper and better for you when is is prepared at home it will be a valuable recipe, I'm sure. Thanks!
