Step 1
Stay Calm
Your first reaction to having to give an impromptu speech may be one of panic. This is understandable; after all, you’re not prepared to give a speech. Stay calm by reminding yourself that no one expects perfection during an impromptu speech. Take deep breaths before your impromptu speech to reduce anxiety and stress. See the Resources area for more information on how to do deep breathing exercises. -
Step 2
Take Notes
If there is time, jot down a quick outline of your impromptu speech. This outline can consist of simple keywords and phrases that you find important. Having an outline handy during your impromptu speech will help you stay focused on what you wanted to say. -
Step 3
The Presentation
Outline or no outline, there are four simple guidelines for organizing your impromptu speech. First, summarize the previous speaker’s main point. Next, state your own point. Then, support your point by using testimony or statistics. Lastly, summarize your main point. Following these four guidelines will keep your impromptu speech presentation focused.
An impromptu speech is common part of public speaking. Do your best by staying calm with deep breathing exercises, taking notes (if possible), and following the four simple guidelines I gave for the actual presentation.
