Things You'll Need:
- a cooked turkey
- a sharp knife
-
Step 1
Do not attempt to carve the turkey as soon as you remove it from the oven. Cover the turkey with aluminum foil when you remove it from the oven. This will help keep it warm. Let the turkey sit for approximately 20 minutes. This will let the juices settle in the meat and make the turkey juicy and tender. Letting the turkey rest will also make it easier to carve.
-
Step 2
The first step in carving the turkey is to remove the legs. This can sometimes be accomplished without cutting. If the leg does not easily snap free of the body, slice between the leg and the body with a sharp knife, cutting through the joint.
-
Step 3
You now want to separate the thigh portion from the drumstick. Using a sharp knife cut through the joint that connects these two parts of the leg.
-
Step 4
Next, remove the wings from the turkey breast. This is best accomplished by pulling the wing away from the body and cutting into the hollow area between the wing and the breast. As you cut into the wing joint, continue pulling on the wing to further expose the wing joint, allowing for an easier cut.
-
Step 5
You are now left with the turkey breast. Many people find this the most difficult to carve. Begin by making a horizontal cut as close to the bone as possible. Cut horizontally as far as possible.
-
Step 6
Once you have made the horizontal cut, make vertical cuts down through the breast to the horizontal cut. This will ensure even slices.
