Stay away from cheap tequila!
Stay away from cheap tequila!

Drinking good tequila, either straight up or in a margarita, is sublime (no pun intended). BUT STAY AWAY FROM THE CHEAP STUFF! Following are instructions for making a classic drink that won't leave you suffering the next day (of course, always drink in moderation!)

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Quality, 100% de Agave, Tequila (such as Patron Silver, Herradura, Don Julio...)
  • A Good orange liqueur (such as Cointreau or Patron Citron)
  • Fresh Limes
  • Limeade
  1. Step 1
    Patron Silver, 100% de Agave

    Patron Silver, 100% de Agave

The secret of a good margarita is to NEVER use mix and NEVER use cheap tequila. The tequila must be made in Mexico and must say on the bottle, 100% Agave or 100% de Agave. True Tequila is distilled from the Agave cactus. If it doesn't say '100% agave' it is not tequila.

  2. Step 2
    Herradura Silver, 100% de Agave

    Herradura Silver, 100% de Agave

Gather your ingredients. I usually use Herradura Silver Tequila. It's moderately priced and excellent either straight up or mixed. At the minimum you'll need:
    Tequila (Herradura Silver)
Orange Liqueur (Cointreau, Patron Citron, or if those are not available a high end Triple Sec).
Fresh Limes (if you can find 'Key Limes' even better)
Limeade (like Newman's Own) is optional.

  3. Step 3
    Cointreau

    Cointreau

Combine the tequila and Orange Liqueur in a shaker. I usually go 50/50, though feel free to use as much as 2 parts tequila to one part liqueur.
Add the juice of one whole lime for each serving.
You can also add a little limeade or water to fill it out.
    Shake and pour over ice

  4. Step 4

You want to keep the amount of sugar to a minimum, so feel free to add more limes and water if you want a larger summer drink. If you use limeade, just use a splash.
    Salud!

Tips & Warnings
  • Stay away from a certain popular brand that is not 100% agave.
  • Please don't drink and drive! These margaritas go down easy so please be careful.
