Things You'll Need:

  • Information
  • Doctor
  1. Step 1

Learn about the benefits of cord blood. Cord blood is blood that comes from the placenta. This blood has the same kinds of stem cells as bone marrow. This means that this blood can be used in a bone marrow transplant in the case of cancer or other immune system disorders.

  2. Step 2

Decide if cord blood banking is right for you. Cord blood banking is expensive, both for banking the blood initially and for storing it over time. It is rare that cord blood would ever be needed, but if you have a child with certain diseases such as leukemia, cord blood banking may be a good choice.

  3. Step 3

If you choose to bank your baby's umbilical cord blood, be sure to research the company. The blood bank should be accredited by a reputable entity such as the American Association of Blood Banks.

  4. Step 4

If you decide not to bank your baby's cord blood because of the expense, consider donating your baby's cord blood. This can be done for free in communities that are participating, and it benefits someone who will need a stem cell transplant.

Tips & Warnings
  • Discuss cord blood banking with your doctor. There may be a compelling reason you are not aware of for banking your baby's blood.
  • Don't jump into cord blood banking just because it is the newest thing to do. Though the procedure is painless for the baby, it is quite costly. The money spent on cord blood banking could be better spent elsewhere, such as on baby's college education.

on 3/10/2009 Cells from cord blood are currently being used for the treatment of a few select diseases, however, these stem cells will contain the same diseased cells which caused this very condition. What this means is your own cells, most likely, will not be used to treat your own illnesses.
