Proper waste disposal of chemical cleaning products is imperative. Not only is improper disposal bad for the environment, it is also potentially harmful to your health and the health of your family. Chemicals can get into the drinking water, the air we breathe, and the foods we eat. Use this article to properly use waste disposal for your home cleaning products.

Things You'll Need:

  • Phone
  • Cardboard box
  • Marker
  1. Step 1

    Look up the phone number for your local waste management company. This might be through the landfill, or a private waste disposal company that owns the trucks that pick up your trash. Ask if they have a special site or location for cleaning products.

  2. Step 2

    Ask the waste disposal company if they will pick up your chemicals along with the rest of your trash, or if you need to drop it off yourself.

  3. Step 3

    Fill a large cardboard box with all of your cleaning products and harmful chemicals. Label this as "Hazardous waste disposal". Tape it shut. You want it to be easily accessible because the company that handles the products may need to see what the contents are.

  4. Step 4

    Go about it the lazy way and wait around for a town hazardous waste disposal day. Most towns have 1 of these per year. You can dispose of all your harmful toxins for free or a small fee. The only problem with this method is that you have to wait around for that day to come.
