Things You'll Need:
- Back Ache
- Epsom Salt
- Pillow
- Bed
- Pain Cream
- Massaging Chair
- Heating Pad
- Ice Pack
- Swimming Pool
- Bathtub
-
Step 1
Get plenty of bed rest for the first couple of days. Don't lay in bed too long. This can sometimes make your back more stiff.
-
Step 2
Exercise is probably the last thing on your mind, but it can be the best thing for chronic back pain. Swimming is a fantastic exercise for back pain.
-
Step 3
Put an ice pack on your back. It will help reduce any swelling.
-
Step 4
Put a heating pad on your back. You can try this for a couple of days or you can rotate the ice and heat back and forth for about 30 minute intervals.
-
Step 5
Try using pain cream from the store such. They have a cheap tube of it at the dollar general store that is just as good to me as those expensive brands. Bengay is also a good one to try. It has things like menthol in it that cools off those sore muscles.
-
Step 6
If your mattress is too soft, try putting a board under it.
-
Step 7
Is your back pain stress related? I use to have a job that would upset me and immediately pain would shoot through my lower back. If this is the case then learning relaxation techniques would be great for you. Pay attention to how you are breathing. If you are holding your breath and not breathing evenly this is a sign you are stressed. Breathing correctly is very important. If you can't calm down and breath evenly because you are so upset, try getting a bottle of bubbles and blowing bubbles. This will take your mind off of your worries and even out your breathing. Meditaton and Tai Chi are also great ways to relax your pain away.
-
Step 8
Try using an adjustable water bed. In a waterbed you have equal pressure on your entire body.
-
Step 9
Try laying down and putting a pillow under your knees. If laying on your back doesn't work try laying in the fetal position, curled up on your side. Try the pillow between your legs.
-
Step 10
Try taking aspirin, ibuprofen ,aleve or willow bark. These are anti-inflamatory drugs and can help with the inflamation.
-
Step 11
Ask someone to massage your back with herbal oils using knuckles and increasing pressure slowly. After a few minutes you will feel less discomfort. This gets rid of tension and relaxes the muscles in that area. If you are like me you can't afford a massage and don't have anyone around that is willing to help you out. Try buying one of those massagers that attach to your chair. The ones they have at CVS pharmacy that you can try for free are fantastic.
-
Step 12
I have read that you can apply St John's Wort directly to the area but I have not tested this one. You may want to give it a try.
-
Step 13
Try including garlic in your diet.
-
Step 14
Try soaking in a tub of Epsom salt. The heat of the bath can increase circulation and reduce swelling. Magnesium has anti-inflamatory and anti-arthitic properties which can be absorbed through the skin. Magnesium is an important nutrient in the body.
