Create the Quiet Atmosphere Necessary to Work at Home

Many people have the misconception that it would be easy to work at home. This is not always true though. If you are a mother or even just live with other people, you might already know how noise levels can cause big problems when you work from home. Here are some tips, from a work at home mother of 3, that might help you out.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Separate room or office
  • Fans
  • Thick quilt or blankets
  • Plantronics Headset or other noise cancellation headset
  1. Step 1

The first thing you will need to do, before you are able to work at home, is to find an area of your house that can be used as your new home office. An unused room is always preferred, however; you could also use a bedroom or basement as well.

  2. Step 2

The next thing that I highly recommend, is that you invest a small amount of money in a Plantronics Headset. This is a specific brand headset that has an amazing noise cancellation feature - that actually works! You can purchase a Plantronics Headset online or usually at your standard office supply store for somewhere near $100.00, this may seem pricey, but it's worth the initial investment since you will be able to work at home AND you won't need to purchase a new one every month like you do with cheap ones.

  3. Step 3

When you have found your work at home job, and you are getting ready to sign in for your shift, a great trick is to have a fan running in the background in the room you are in, and also just outside of the door to your home office. This really muffles out background noises and the two fans seem to work better than one alone. Having one of them on the other side of the door helps muffle sound without creating too much background "white noise" while you are on the phones.

  4. Step 4

If you are like me, and have young ones at home, you might also want to try taking a large, think blanket or quilt and use it as a room divider by hanging it up and blocking your smaller work area off. The thickness of the blanket will absorb some of the noises the way carpet in a room does.

  5. Step 5

If you have tried all of these and still face loud house members who make it hard for you to have a quiet area to work at home, you may want to consider a night shift. There are many work at home jobs that offer shifts 24 hours a day.

Tips & Warnings
  • To hang the curtain you could get a shower curtain bar that is adjustable and place it kitty-corner on the walls of your office so create an area that is in the corner of the room.
  • If you can afford the Plantronics Headset, you probably won't need the blanket trick because of the noise cancellation features.
  • If you cannot manage to keep other household members quiet during your shift, you might be better off calling in or trading your shift to someone else. Many businesses that employ at home professionals care mostly about background noise. You might save your job by calling in one time, rather than getting fired for having a screaming baby in the background.
  • You should avoid trying to work at home when you are the primary care giver to small children. You cannot expect to be able to give 100% to both of these important areas of your life.

on 12/9/2008 With three kids, a business phone and cell phone I have plenty of distractions. I usually try to get up about 5:30 to get in morning time and then again, late at night. Thanks for the tips. NW

on 11/30/2008 I work outside of home and then freelance when I get home as a writer, so I don't have to worry about noise when I answer the phone, but family can be some what distracting when you are trying to concentrate to write. Sometimes I cannot hear myself think. You have offered some good ideas. Thanks so much.
