Things You'll Need:
- 3 cps. Flour
- 2 tsp Baking Powder
- 1 tsp Salt
- 4-6 tbs Shortening or Lard
- 1 1/4 cp Water
-
Step 1
Mix all of your dry ingredients in a large bowl.
-
Step 2
Use a pastry cutter, or your hands to cut in the shortening. Add a few tablespoons at a time.
-
Step 3
Bit by bit add your water to the mixture. You don't want your dough to be sticky, keep it soft and light. You may not need to use all of your water, if you find you have added too much simply add a little more flour to the mixture.
-
Step 4
Knead your dough until it is a firm ball. Now you will need to separate the dough into about 12 smaller balls. Place these balls on a baking sheet and allow to sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes.
-
Step 5
While your dough is sitting begin to heat a skillet or griddle at Med-High heat.
-
Step 6
Once your dough is ready begin to flatten each ball with a rolling pin. Use flour on your dough so your rolling pin will not stick. The best way to flatten the tortilla into a nice round shape is to periodically flip the dough over while you are rolling. You want them to be very thin, but not so thin that they break when handled.
-
Step 7
Add your tortilla' s to your skillet/griddle. They can take a matter of a few seconds to cook on each side... so be ready with a spatula! When they are finished they will have some brown spots on each side.
-
Step 8
Now your tortilla' s are ready to be served! Enjoy!
