Pen pals can correspond by snail mail or the Internet.

According to the Global Penfriends website, extensive databases are available that can match pen pals based on a host of different demographics including age, gender, location, and hobbies. In decades past, pen pals could only communicate via postal mail. However, modern technology now makes it possible to correspond with your pen pal via email or online social forums. Learn about different cultures, exchange information on mutual interests, or network with individuals within your industry by starting up a pen pal relationship. The first letter to a new pen pal is important, as it sets the tone for your written relationship.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the first sentence of your letter to indicate who you are, and why you are writing. Make it clear that you want to begin a pen pal relationship, and tell your recipient how you got his or her contact information.

    • 2

Focus on providing basic information about yourself in the next few sentences. Tell your pen pal your name, nickname, gender, age, geographic location, and whether you have had other pen pals in the past.

    • 3

Write the entire second paragraph to your new pen pal about your interests and hobbies. Be as specific as possible. Indicate which genre of books or movies you enjoy, what hobbies you pursue, and all the foreign countries you have explored. Also mention the intellectual or philosophical subjects you enjoy discussing.

    • 4

Ask a few questions about your pen pal before closing your letter. Inquire as to his or her interests and hobbies. Invite your pen pal to tell you more about the society in which the person lives. Keep your questions light and friendly; you do not need to get very deep in your first letter to your pen pal.

    • 5

Invite your new pen pal to write you back; never demand that the person does so. Phrases such as, "It would be great to hear back from you," or,"I am excited to learn more about you when you write back," are ideal. End your letter with a friendly and light goodbye, followed by your name. Make sure to include your return address at the bottom of the letter itself so your new pen pal knows exactly where to reach you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pen pals do not always return letters. Write introductory letters to three or four prospective pen pals at the start of your venture, so that you are more likely to get at least one reply.

  • Never include extremely personal information in pen pal letters; this could lead to identity theft or other abusive outcomes.
