Make a Catnip Toy

If you’ve ever bought a catnip toy from the store, you’ve probably noticed that they’re not only expensive, but fall apart after your cat plays with it for more than an hour. Not only that, but many catnip toys sold by stores can only be used once. After the catnip inside the toy loses its potency you have to throw it away and replace it.
So why not make your own catnip toy? Don’t know how? No problem. Just follow the steps below to create a catnip toy that will make your cat, and your wallet, happy.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Loose leaf catnip
  • Cloth
  • Twine
  1. Step 1

Buy some loose catnip. Usually found at pet stores or specialty health stores, buy a package of loose leaf catnip (it will look a lot like loose tea leaves).

  2. Step 2

Pick a cloth. While something like cheesecloth is the best thing to use when creating a catnip toy, any kind of durable - but still breathable - fabric will work.

  3. Step 3

Cut the cloth. After you’ve chosen a cloth to use for your catnip toy, cut it into an 8 inch by 8 inch square. If this is bigger than you desire, simply cut it down a few inches.

  4. Step 4

Find some twine. Find some durable twine (but make sure it doesn’t have any wire inside!) to tie up your catnip toy. You should cut it so that it is around 12 inches in length.

  5. Step 5

Pour the catnip. Set the piece of fabric down on the table and pour around 1/4 cup of catnip into the center of the cloth.

  6. Step 6

Bunch it up. After you’ve poured the catnip into the center of the cloth, take the outside edges of the fabric and bunch them all together so that you’ve holding what looks like an upside down lollipop.

  7. Step 7

Tie it up. After you’ve gotten the fabric bunched into an acceptable shape, tie the twine around the narrow portion of the bunched up fabric. Be sure to tie is securely, even double tying it a few times if need be.

  8. Step 8

Let your cat(s) go crazy. Unless you choose to add a long string to your catnip toy, you are pretty much done. Let your cats go crazy. And when you think that the toy has seen enough wear or that the catnip inside has lost its potency, just toss it and make a new one. It’s as easy as that.
