Keep the kids safe on Halloween!
Keep the kids safe on Halloween!
M. Popolo

It's Halloween and the kids can't wait to begin trick or treating. Take a few minutes before you head out to go over some basic rules and guidelines with your children. Keeping them safe is the most important thing!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • flashlight
  • glow sticks
  • reflective clothing
  1. Step 1

Stick to a neighborhood you are familiar with. Although it's tempting to hit up an area where there are a lot of houses close together, it's also easy to get misdirected or lost in an unfamiliar neighborhood.

  2. Step 2

Incorporate something reflective as a part of the kid's costumes, or have them carry glow sticks. (Glow sticks also come in necklaces and bracelets). With so many children out trick or treating, it's easy for your child to get lost in a crowd so do what you can to make them stand out!

  3. Step 3

Bring a flashlight to shine on paths or walkways that are dark.

  4. Step 4

Do not let the kids eat anything, no matter who it came from, until it has been brought home and you have inspected it.

  5. Step 5

Start trick or treating as early as possible. Some areas have allotted times for trick or treating. If yours does, try to go out at the earliest part of the time frame when it might not be as dark.

  6. Step 6

Go over safety rules with your children before heading out the door. They should know what to do if they get separated from you or your group. They should also know their full name and your full name. Slip an index card with your name and telephone number on it into their trick or treat bag. Let them know it's in there in case they get lost.

  7. Step 7

Make sure your kids know to walk carefully on other people's property and when going up and down steps. Especially if pathways or steps are blocked by decorations - it's important for them to watch their step.

  8. Step 8

Remind kids not to pet or approach other people's dogs. Even a friendly dog that knows your child can become excited with all of the activities of Halloween.

Tips & Warnings
  • Trick or treat in a group if possible. There is safety in numbers!
  • If you have small children, bring a stroller or wagon for them to ride in if they get tired.
  • Any face masks or head gear should fit properly and not cover the eyes, nose or mouth.
  • All garments should fit well and not be long enough to trip on.
