Thanksgiving is a classic time to cook up a turkey and gather with friends and family. When working with such a large bird, there is often a question of how to properly thaw the turkey before cooking it. This article will give you the step by step to thaw your turkey safely and effectively.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • your turkey
  • a refridgerator
  • to read this article
  1. Step 1
    frozen turkey
    frozen turkey

    Take frozen turkey and place breast side up on a baking sheet or tray

  2. Step 2

    place the baking tray and turkey in the refrigerator

  3. Step 3
    turkey thawing
    turkey thawing

    let defrost for approximately one day for every four pounds of meat

Tips & Warnings
  • if you need more than one day to defrost, you can drain the water from the pan each day (as the turkey thaws, it will produce water on the tray or pan)
  • although refrigerate thawing is recommended, cold water thawing can be done as well (see resource link)
  • never defrost your meat at room temperature to avoid bacteria growth.
