Create a pet-free zone in your home, such as the bedroom or office. Train your dog that certain areas are off limits, use dog gates or close doors to reduce dander in those rooms. To further decrease dander, keep pets off furniture and wash rugs frequently. Wherever possible, eliminate carpet and drapes, which harbor dander.

Vacuum carpets frequently with a HEPA filter, which traps airborne allergens. Purchase an air purifier specifically designed for dander and put it in areas that your dog occupies. Use high-efficiency filters in your homes air-conditioner unit and cover vents with cheesecloth. All of these products can be found at local home improvement stores.

Wash your dog one to two times per week to control shedding. Use natural shampoo that is free of chemicals and fragrances, which dry out the skin. Look for moisturizing pet allergy shampoo or dander control shampoo at local pet stores. If you are bothered by allergies, wear a mask and gloves to bathe your dog.

Brush your dog daily outside with a slicker brush. A slicker brush removes dead skin, promoting the production of natural oils. Purchase the brush at a local pet supply or horse supply store. Brushing your dog outside prevents the dander that is stirred up from flying around in your home.

Feed your dog omega-3 oil such as salmon oil. Omega-3 promotes healthy skin and a shiny coat, reducing dander. Salmon oil can be found at local pet supply stores or online. Provide your dog with a balanced diet with high-quality protein, fruit, vegetables and whole grains. A high-quality diet supports a healthy immune system and coat.
